Photohunt: Blue

This is a photo of one of the four oil on canvas that I own done by the late great New England artist Harry Day. This is one of my very favorites and is said to be a portrait of his wife. I was very fortunate to have purchased all four of mine for $1300 while he was still alive. Now his paintings and Photo shoots for Vogue are way out of my price range. While working as a photographer for Vogue,(circa: 1940-1950) he took photos of some of the biggest stars and models of the day. He is classified as a Modern abstract artist and he is among my all time favorites. It was very difficult to locate much information about him. However I did find this online gallery here that gives a brief biography and also a selection of some of his landscapes.

what elegance! what sophistication captured on canvass! Indeed something to be treasured and admired...

I also like the small factoid about Harry Day (RIP)! I live in New England yet unfortunately have not heard of his works... there is also very little info about him, you're right. (Not even on Wiki yet.). Found an obit on him which seem to fit your description, (hope he was the same Harry Day you refer.)

thanks for sharing.

We love the painting of his wife! Our Grampy would love the second, he has a great love of anything with an oriental flair!

WillThink4Wine spoke up on November 1, 2008 3:26 AM

As G&G said, my Dad would love the second! Both are so difernt and so beautiful! Good for you for having the foresight to buy them so long ago!

Oh my RJ,
I am sorry to hear that you are blue in so many different ways..it sounds as if one might be just down in the dumps...maybe all the great shots this Saturday will lift your spirits.

It is very late for me now and I think I did stop by already but I will double check after a few hours of sleep.

Thanks for dropping by!:-))

jams o donnell spoke up on November 1, 2008 3:51 AM

Wow you lucked out getting the paintings for such a reasonable price! I have not heard of him before. I will have to investigate further. Happy weekend

Shinade spoke up on November 1, 2008 3:54 AM

Oh Juliana actually it wasn't very expensive at all when I bought it. Remember that I got four of his works for this price. And now you can't even get one for less than $80 to $3000 dollars....so actually I got a steal!!

Thanks for stopping by I really enjoyed yours too!!:-))

Shinade spoke up on November 1, 2008 3:56 AM

Thank you G&G I really love the second one also. It was my very first purchase and the one that got me hooked on his work.

Thanks for stopping by to see mine!!:-))

Shinade spoke up on November 1, 2008 3:58 AM

Yes Mae you are correct the obit from The Boothbay Register is him. In fact, I purchased the ones that I have in Boothbay at a frame and gallery shop. I think they too still have a small collection of his works for sale.

Thanks for stopping in!!:-)))
